Afternoon

The first batch of new murals is up. Can't say I'm all that impressed, the styles are a bit dated. They might grow on me I guess.

Anyway, here's the pick of them so far.

I think they should re-paint them all with Devo album covers. Go the spuds!

Your advice that the Devonshire Street Tunnel Murals have been painted over is depressing and a needless act of barbarism.

The fact that the Murals were undertaken in 1986 and were 20years old and survived the graffitti anarchists is truly remarkable as to there quality and artistic human message.
Why paint over them when in fact they were painted on panels---that can be removed and relocated.

The whole idea was to add more murals to the walls , a whole lot of wall lenght in the tunnel was never completed. More murals were planned but never done.

If I had the power I would even have heritage listed them as they are of their time.

This is not as stupid as it sounds as Telarah Railway Station built in 1994 designed by myself has been heritage listed as a Railway Station of the 1990,s and is never to be demolished.

Now we look to what will replace these murals , however they are in reality irreplaceable.

We also now apply the real test as to how the new planned images will combat graffitti, as the whole intent in the original concept was to stop graffitti and the murals did.

We look forward to the graffitti that will now cover these walls.

Yours Sincerely,
Stephen Caldis
